Any of several small birds of the family Rallidae, order Gruiformes, related to the corncrake.

Another species which occurs annually in the UK, and sometimes nests, is the spotted crake, Porzana porzana. This species inhabits swamps, wet meadows, and the edges of lakes and rivers, but always where there is thick cover.
